What is Hepatitis
Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver caused by a virus, drugs, or other factors. The three most common types of the illness are Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C.
Hepatitis A is acquired by ingestion of fecal matter, even in microscopic amounts, from close person-to-person contact or ingestion of contaminated food or drinks, while Hepatitis B and C are primarily spread through sexual contact and needle sharing.
Many people with Hepatitis have no symptoms, but others may experience:
- sudden jaundice (their skin and eyes turn yellow)
- fatigue
- nausea
- vomiting and abdominal pain
- dark urine and light stools
- fever
- liver failure
Hepatitis is a serious illness - you can't live without a liver! Your liver keeps poisons (including alcohol and drugs) from harming your body, it makes necessary body chemicals, and it helps to digest the food you eat. A damaged liver cannot handle all these tasks very well, putting your life in danger.
