NeuroAIDS Study. University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.
Enrollment: Open
Study Details:
The NeuroAIDS Study promotes research concerning the effects of HIV infection on the brain and nervous system. Some people with HIV infection develop memory loss, dementia, pain or loss of sensation in their legs/feet and other neurological problems. We work to provide detailed medical and psychological information as well as specimens to participating centers and scientists around the world.
HIV positive individuals are eligible for participation under the one or more of the following circumstances. Participants must have: lab work that shows a consistently low CD4 count, a history of major illnesses and conditions other than HIV and symptoms of brain or spinal cord disease such as dementia or neuropathy. Every six months to two years, participating clients will undergo a series of tests and examinations to measure neurological state, psychological condition and substance abuse history as well as submit blood and urine specimens. Additionally, those who consent to participate agree to undergo autopsy after death which will not affect funeral plans or viewing of the body. A next of kin family member or responsible party must consent before the procedure can be performed.
Participation in this study will not change a patient’s medical condition or treatment plan. However, there may be other benefits such as: the earlier discovery of problems due to routine neurological and psychological testing, gratification from participation in research that contributes to helping others and regular contact with staff members who are familiar with HIV/AIDS services may assist you in the coordination of care.
