Question: What is Resource Center Dallas Foundation?
Answer: Resource Center Dallas Foundation was established in 2011 to raise funds to construct and endow a new home for Resource Center Dallas. For 30 years, Resource Center Dallas has empowered the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities and all people affected by HIV through improving health and wellness, strengthening families and communities and providing transformative education and advocacy.
Question: What are some of the programs of Resource Center Dallas?
Answer: Resource Center Dallas is the largest LGBT community center in Texas and serves 70,000 people annually through a variety of services including a food pantry, HIV & STD testing, dental services, transgender wellness programs, hot meals, mental health counseling, a research library and archives, an HIV/AIDS helpline, meeting space for outside groups, regional diversity trainings and advocacy work.
Question: Why a new building?
Answer: Resource Center Dallas is beyond capacity in its current 65-year-old converted church building and 3 outdated leased spaces. Upgraded facilities will help us respond to a projected 30% increase in the HIV infection rate and meet the increasing demand for community space and programs. Lives and livelihoods depend on our ability to address the growing health, community and advocacy needs for North Texas, and a new building designed for our needs is the most economical way to achieve these goals.
Question: What services are planned for the new building?
Answer: The new building will increase HIV/STD prevention and testing services by 50%; double the capacity of our mental health counseling program and dental clinic; and increase our nutrition services' capacity by 35%. Additionally, the building provides more space for the community center, meeting rooms, low-cost office space for other non-profits, and expanded programming to meet the needs of LGBT youth, seniors and others.
Question: How much will the new building cost?
Answer: The land was purchased for $1.8 million and construction, furniture, fixtures and equipment is estimated to run from $6-$8 million, for a total construction project of approximately $10 million.
Question: What is the construction timeline?
Answer: Construction is planned to begin in 2014. Construction is estimated to last at least 12 months. A grand opening is expected in 2015.
Question: What does the new building look like?
Answer: The new home for Resource Center Dallas is a three-story building near the corner of Cedar Springs and Inwood Road. Designed by architect Jim Langford, the building will seek silver level LEED certification, providing a high level of efficiency and low operating costs.
Question: Who is leading the building project?
Answer: The campaign and building project are led by co-chairs Linda Moore and Gary Olsen and Resource Center Dallas executive director and CEO, Cece Cox. Ms. Moore is a corporate attorney and has been involved with the Center since the mid-1990s. Mr. Olsen, retired, worked for 25 years at the Federal Home Loan Bank and has served on various non-profit boards in the area. Ms. Cox is an attorney with 30 years of advocacy work with the LGBT community. She joined the Center in 2007 and became CEO in 2010.
